The Telethon Kids Institute is seeking healthy pregnant women with an expected delivery date from 03 April to 30 June 2018 who are delivering at SJOG Subiaco, Mt Lawley, Murdoch and KEMH hospitals to participate in an international vaccine trial . The maternal vaccine aims to provide protection to newborn babies against RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) infections in a similar way to the recommended pertussis and influenza vaccines. RSV is very common and in infants less than 6 months of age can develop into more severe complications such as bronchiolitis (inflammation of the small airways in the lungs) or pneumonia and may require hospitalisation due to the infant not being able to feed or requiring oxygen.
