Two UWA-linked athletes have joined the 57-strong Australian track and field team for the upcoming IAAF World Under 20 Championships.

The Finnish city of Tempere will play host to the future stars in July, with junior athletes from over 160 countries competing for international honours.

UWA student athlete Declan Tingay and UWA Athletics Club’s Lauren Hyde-Cooling have both been selected to represent Australia, competing in race-walking and pole vault respectively.

After winning the recent trials, Declan has established himself as a force within race-walking in Australia, narrowly missing out on both the u-18 and u-20 Australian records in the past 12 months.

In addition to the World Under 20 Championships, Declan will also travel to Taicang, China, in May for the World Race Walking Teams Championship.

Meanwhile Lauren launched herself to new personal best of 4.06m at the Australian Junior Championships to earn an automatic U20 world championship start in the pole vault.

For Lauren, looking up to fellow club members Nina Kennedy and Liz Parnov must be inspiring. The two UWA Athletics athletes have been selected to represent Australia in the upcoming Commonwealth Games, with Nina in particular in the form of her life.

The 16th IAAF World Under 20 Championships will be held from July 10 to 15 later this year.
