Tuesday, 30 January 2018

As you would have read in last week’s UWA Forward, from next week, staff will notice changes to the bins in their office areas and common areas.

These changes, designed to introduce waste separation and recycling in all buildings, will reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and increase recycling rates.

There will be two types of waste containers – co-mingled recycling and general waste - and the below provides the information you need to use them.

Co-mingled recycling: Light-coloured bin / Yellow lid and label

Co-mingled recycling bins should be used for paper and cardboard (including paper towels), plastic containers, aluminium and steel cans, recyclable packaging, glass bottles and milk cartons.

They should not be used for plastic bags, food waste, drinking glassware, ceramics, polystyrene or electronics. More information is available here.

You can find the following co-mingled recycling bins on campus:

  • 15-litre office bins – light coloured with a clear plastic liner, and emptied weekly by cleaners
  • 60-litre common area bins – black with a yellow lid and emptied daily by cleaners

General waste: Black bin / Red lid and label

General waste bins should be used for plastic bags, food waste, ceramics, broken glass, coffee cups, polystyrene, contaminated paper and cardboard, and any other non-recyclable items. More information is available here.

You can find the following general waste bins on campus:

  • 15-litre office bins – black with a black plastic liner, and emptied weekly by cleaners
  • 60-litre common area bins – with a red lid and emptied daily by cleaners
