Good morning. This time of year brings great opportunity to enjoy Summer on and around our beautiful campus including the Lotterywest Film season at Somerville ; Recreate courses which run from January to March; the iconic Perth Festival opening on 9 February and Writers Week , a wonderful celebration of storytelling, beginning on 19 February.

In the spirit of embracing this vibrant time of year, we look to the start of the academic year with great optimism and expectation. On that note, I am very happy to share with you that Professor YC Gary Lee has become the third UWA researcher to receive a Medical Research Future Fund Next Generation Researchers Fellowship, a program that supports Australia’s best and brightest clinical researchers. Announced by the Federal Government last week, it is pleasing our researchers are attracting such competitive national funding.

This sets the tone for a positive start to the year and I encourage us all to take the time to celebrate such achievements.
