New Year, new you! We often find that a new year is the perfect time to get fit and healthy, but it can be hard to find a clear path that keeps you balanced and enjoying exercise. Here are four tips to make sure 2018 is the year you get fit and stay fit!

Stay away from gimmicks

There are a lot of fads and trends out there, promising get-fit-quick schemes that often don’t work out. Just think about what you’re eating and when you are eating it. If you instantly halve the amount of kilojoules you eat each day, you’re going to struggle. As our fitness trainer Emily says, “If you think you’re hungry, you probably are! Don’t drink water to combat it because a gimmick told you ‘you’re probably thirsty’ - eat some food!”

Keep focused

The only way you are going to get fit is by putting in the work. This means regular intervals of physical activity that works for you. Our customer service attendant Jeet recommends doing at least 30 minutes of exercise every day. This does not need to be intense, but simply keep you in a routine of keeping active and motivated.

Find a new interest

Maybe you are bored of running, or you’ve fallen out of love with the gym. If you’ve ever wanted to try anything new, now is the time to step up and take on an exciting challenge. It’s incredibly important for your mental health to do something you love, and if you stay fit while doing it, it’s an added bonus. UWA Sport offers short, seven week courses through our Recreate program, which can help you find a new favourite hobby and live out new experiences.

Know what you want to achieve

This is crucial to finding the right balance of fitness that works for you. If you don’t have a clear idea of what you want to achieve in the long term, it will be very hard to make daily fitness targets, which can lead to your exercise becoming arbitrary and inconsistent. Think about your realistic goals for 2018, and then get out there and start achieving them!
