A rising star in Australian hockey and one of UWA’s highest performing student athletes, Georgia Wilson , has been ruled out of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games with a knee injury.

The 21-year-old Hockeyroo tore her left anterior cruciate ligament in a practice match with the Australian side.

Georgia had established herself in the side since making her debut in June last year, and the injury and subsequent time on the sidelines will come as a blow to her career trajectory. Recent displays at the Festival of Hockey and in individual Australian games went a long way towards making the Commonwealth Games.

Speaking to the West Australian, Georgia said, “I feel that it’s quite unfair. I worked extremely hard over the six-week period where we were decentralised and my testing the day before showed that I did make improvements in my fitness.

“I was on track for making the Comm Games, which is something that hurts. But Tokyo (2020 Olympics) has always been the main goal.”

Despite being ruled out of play, Georgia will continue to cheer the team on, with the Hockeyroos currently having a series of games lined up to be played in Western Australia this January.

Her current injury is likely to keep her out for a year, but the student athlete is confident she can make an impact on her return.

“I have no doubt I’ll come back,” Wilson said. “It’s just going to be making sure that I’ll remain patient. It gives me an opportunity to really work on some weaknesses I have, like my running technique and my agility. You really have to start from scratch.”
