Last weekend (7/1) the Western Australian Open Indoor Hockey Women claimed Gold after defeating Queensland 5-3 in the final of the 2018 Indoor National Championships. The result meant that the team ended the tournament having won all of their games.
UWA student athlete and UWA Hockey Club player Claudia Nielsen formed a part of the team that maintained a 100% win rate. Claudia has previously been involved in the U21s indoor and field hockey teams.
She also contributed to the women’s UWA hockey team that won the 2017 Australian University Games, and was a Green & Gold winner at the tournament.
Speaking after the win against Queensland, Head Coach John Christie said the side had achieved an outstanding feat.
“The players are over the moon. It’s been a number of years since WA’s women have won a Championship and some of the girls involved have never won a gold medal at a National competition before so they are very happy.”
The U21s tournament will be played from 9- 12 January, with Western Australia looking for redemption, having narrowly missed out on winning the tournament last year.
