Awards and achievements
Name: Assistant Professor Amir Karton, School of Molecular Sciences
Achievement: The Australian Academy of Science has awarded the prestigious Le Févre Medal to Assistant Professor Karton for his leading role in the development of quantum chemistry methods for the calculation of highly accurate chemical properties such as reaction energies and barrier heights. These methods have been widely used over the past decade to understand and predict chemical processes.
Name: Professor Killugudi Swaminathan Iyer, School of Molecular Sciences
Achievement: The Australian Academy of Science has awarded the prestigious Jacques Miller Medal to Professor Iyer for research into experimental biomedicine. He leads an internationally recognised research program that focuses on developing innovative medicines to treat currently untreatable medical emergencies, including traumatic brain injuries and cancers.
Name: Dr Laura Boykin, School of Molecular Sciences
Achievement: Dr Boykin won the international Gifted Citizen Prize for 2017 in Mexico as part of the La Cuidad de las Ideas Festival. Dr Boykin presented the team’s latest project The Cassava Virus Action Project, involving a network of researchers, farmers and industry people collaborating to use a pocket DNA sequencer to improve the management of cassava viruses in east Africa. The project aims to reduce the risk of community crop failure and help preserve livelihoods. Dr Boykin is the first Australian-based person to win the award.
