A lecturer at the University of Western Australia has been invited to provide advice to the South African National Treasury.

Dr Andy Schmulow, Senior Lecturer at the UWA Law School, has been invited to support the South African authorities as they adopt the Australian ‘Twin Peaks’ model of financial system regulation.

The Australian twin peaks is a model of financial system regulation characterised by two equal but independent bodies: the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) and the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA).

Dr Schmulow said his appointment reflects UWA’s leading expertise and research into Twin Peaks.

“The work that we’re conducting at UWA places us at the forefront of international twin peaks research, providing us with the opportunity to have a meaningful impact on government policy and legislative reforms for countries adopting this model,” he said.

“South Africa is the first developing country to adopt the Australian model, making the reforms the most significant since South Africa left the gold standard in 1932. Our advice and input will be central to the implementation of the new twin peaks system.”

The Australian twin peaks model is increasingly being adopted worldwide, with six countries having already adopted it and around a further twelve signalling an intention to do so.

Dr Schmulow is collaborating in his advisory role with research colleagues at the Melbourne Law School, Monash University, and the University of Sydney Business School.
