Owen Davies, UWA’s new Chief Marketing Officer, has long wanted to work in the higher education sector and is looking forward to this new challenge.

With 20 years of experience in marketing strategy, research, analysis, brand development and marketing communications execution, Owen brings with him a wealth of knowledge and a customer-driven approach.

“I am really excited to join UWA and work in higher education. Throughout my career in the corporate sector, I’ve always been passionate about helping people make the right career development decisions so that they go on to achieve their professional goals. I’ve particularly enjoyed coaching many graduates - the sense of fulfilment I gained from this experience is what inspired me to want to work in education,” Owen says.

Owen has built his career on a foundation of evidence-based marketing with a clear focus on the customer experience, which he has honed through the past 10 years at Crown.

“Brand, marketing and recruitment are the key functions I look after and I will be focussed on increasing our student numbers. The key pillars I will bring with me to this role are ensuring our marketing efforts are customer-led, evidence-based, and emphasise UWA’s reputation for high quality teaching and our world-leading innovation,” he says.

Owen also says he is a strong believer in building advocacy amongst current and former students as a way of encouraging more students to choose UWA.

“I’m really passionate about making a difference in the lives of our students and ensuring they have the best experience possible. After all, they’re our best brand ambassadors, and word of mouth is a powerful tool within our target market,” he says.

While he’s new to the higher education sector, Owen understands the challenges universities face in differentiating themselves from the pack and it’s a challenge he looks forward to tackling.

“Initially my first goal is to listen, absorb and analyse. This is a new environment for me and I’m keen to gather all the knowledge I can before setting our strategy next year.

“I’m really excited to be here, it’s amazing to have the opportunity to work amongst world-class staff, and at such a beautiful campus.”

“I can understand why UWA holds a special place in the community, it really is a place for everyone to engage with and enjoy,” he says.
