Two students from the Faculty of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences have been awarded scholarships in Resource Related Engineering and Environmental Sciences in the Mining Sector at a luncheon supported by the WA Mining Club and a range of co-sponsors.

This is the 15th consecutive year the WA Mining Club has offered their scholarship program, with an aim to encourage students to continue their tertiary studies in mining-related disciplines to ensure the sustainability of talent within the sector and develop the next generation of leaders.

Scholarships are awarded across eight categories; Geology, Indigenous Student, Female Student in a Technical Discipline in the Mining Sector (two scholarships available), Resource Related Engineering Discipline, Engineering in the Mining Sector, Metallurgy, Environmental Sciences in the Mining Sector.

Jake Andrijasevich, a Master of Professional Engineering (Mining Engineering) student was awarded the scholarship for Resource Related Engineering Discipline (co-sponsored by Mount Gibson Iron Limited) and Kelly Hawes, a Master of Professional Engineering (Environmental Engineering) student received the Environmental Sciences in the Mining Sector scholarship (co-sponsored by Vimy Resources Limited). Each scholarship winner receives a $10,000 grant, along with additional benefits including mentoring, career support and increased visibility within the industry.

Winners were selected by a panel made up of representatives from the co-sponsor and a representative of the WA Mining Club, which considered factors such as academic and work history, personal circumstances, financial need for a scholarship and commitment to their chosen career.

Winners were chosen from over 250 applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds and educational institutions including Curtin University, Edith Cowan University, Murdoch University, The University of Western Australia and Esperance Senior High School.

When asked what the scholarship meant to them Mr Andrijasevich said, “Being awarded the scholarship is a great honour, the industry mentoring and career support are invaluable and the monetary support is a huge help to our studies”.
