Last Friday (17 November), Hockey WA announced the State’s Under 21 and Under 18 Indoor Women’s Teams set to compete at next year’s National Championships.

The U21s team includes a UWA student athlete , the UWA Hockey Club’s Claudia Nielsen . Claudia’s involvement in the team follows on from her place in the U21s field hockey team earlier in the year.

Western Australia will be looking for redemption this year, after narrowly missing out on winning the tournament. The team went down 2-0 in a shootout to hosts New South Wales. There was however a silver lining for the women in black and gold with Chloe Carter finishing as the competition’s top goal scorer with 14.

Claudia was a part of the women’s UWA hockey team that won the 2017 Australian University Games, and was a Green & Gold winner at the tournament.

Originally from Tamworth, in country New South Wales, Claudia moved to Western Australia to study science at The University of Western Australia. Her choice of Perth for her studies was deliberate, as the city well-known for hockey passion.

Claudia was also recently awarded a Full Blue at the 2017 UWA Blues Awards, alongside fellow UWA Hockey Club stars Pippa Morgan and Jessica Butterworth .

The U21s team has begun training, with the competition set for 9 to 12 January.
