UWA’s annual Staff Sports day has wrapped for another year with around 500 participants taking on the heat in a fun-filled day.

Riley Oval was awash with colour, as competitors dressed in red, blue, yellow, green and purple depending on which team they were representing. Health and Medical Sciences’ blue oasis themed marquee was judged the best on the day.

The festivities kicked off with the 5km run and 3km walk with athletes braving the midday sun on the picturesque campus course. Roberto Busi from Science was first to cross the line after setting a blistering pace, and Alexandra Meek from EMS won the women’s race.

Following lunch the team sports began and competition was fierce on the soccer field, volleyball and croquet courts. Congratulations to the Central team for winning the volleyball and croquet and ABLE for taking out the soccer.

UWA Sport Program Coordinator Pia Chaffey who coordinated the day’s activities was really pleased with how successful the day was.

“It was fantastic to see so many people involved, being active and cheering on their teams.

“Everyone played hard, but played fair and enjoyed themselves which is the main aim of the event,” she says.

Pia says that feedback from the day had been really positive and she’s already looking forward to 2018.

“It’s such a fun day to organise and be part of and I think it’s great staff have the opportunity to spend some time with their colleagues away from their desks.

“Well done to everyone who participated, and those who came along to support their colleagues – you all played a role in making it such a great day,” she says.
