Hockey Australia today confirmed nine athletes have been added to the Men’s National Development Squad.
Tasmania’s Kieron Arthur, Queensland’s Robert Bell and Hugh Pembroke, New South Wales’ Matthew Butturini, Kieran Govers and Jack Hayes, Victoria’s Tim Cross and Stephen Gale and WA’s Frazer Gerrard have been added by the National’s Men’s Selection Panel.
Gerrard is a UWA student who also plays for UWA Hockey Club. Earlier this year, he was one of four club players to get called up to the WA Thundersticks. The state call up came after UWA Hockey won the Premier League Grand Final.
Frazer, 20, is a composed defender, is studying Commerce at UWA. He also won the Best and Fairest Award at the WA Grand Final.
Earlier this year the women’s squad was announced, including UWA student and UWA Hockey Club player Pippa Morgan, who plays for the women’s premier 1s.
Pippa is a midfield player who has long been a member of the UWA team, as well as steadily growing through state teams, having been regularly called up to the WA Diamonds squad.
Kookaburras head coach Colin Batch said the Australian Hockey League (AHL) had provided an ideal opportunity to assess the talent available with a view to offering opportunities in the National Development Squad ahead of 2018 which includes the Commonwealth Games and World Cup.
