The Kookaburras have opened their 2017 Oceania Cup campaign with a comfortable 30-0 win over Papua New Guinea at Sydney Olympic Park Hockey Centre on Wednesday night.

UWA Hockey’s Tom Wickham joined Blake Govers and Dylan Wotherspoon with five goals each in the victory.

UWA’s Daniel Beale scored two goals for the Kookaburras, whilst UWA Student Athlete Ben Craig was also on the team sheet.

Australia will turn their attention to the Black Sticks who they meet at 8pm on Thursday and appear likely to face in the final on Sunday.

Meanwhile UWA Student Athlete Georgia Wilson will feature in the Hockeyroo’s clash with Papua New Guinea due to be played tonight.

Australian representation comes after the inclusion of UWA Hockey Club players in the Australian Hockey League for the WA Thundersticks and Diamonds. Ben Craig made an appearance for his home state, playing under New South Wales colours.

With the Kookaburras playing such a sharp and high scoring game, there is hope that the Hockeyroos will replicate their success in the campaign to secure the Oceania Cup for 2017.
