Researchers at The University Western Australia are to team up with the Western Australian Mental Health Commission to assist workplaces to promote and support employees’ mental health.

The Mental Health Commission has partnered with UWA’s Centre for Transformative Work Design to support the development of evidence-based activities and resources within the Centre’s state-wide Thrive@Work Strategy.

Funding from the Mental Health Commission will allow UWA researchers to produce assessment tools, training modules, educational materials and other resources to promote employees’ positive mental health

The Director of UWA's Centre for Transformative Work Design, Professor Sharon Parker, said people's jobs play an important role in their well-being, especially given that we spend a large amount of our time at work.

“Poorly designed work can take a heavy toll on workers' mental health, whereas when work is well-designed, employees will not only be healthier but more productive as well,” Professor Parker said.

“The funding from the MHC will allow us to invest much needed time and resources into research and working with employers as part of the Thrive@Work project to create well-designed work that stimulates and engages employees whilst supporting the implementation of new WA Workplace Mental Health Standards.”

UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Dawn Freshwater said the fact that the State Government could enlist the help of UWA to ensure the mental well-being of workers in Western Australia, showed the University was a leader in the field.

“This partnership between the Western Australian Mental Health Commission and UWA will result in research that will have a real impact,” Professor Freshwater said.

“It is vital that the University’s research is focused on outcomes that improve society and impact positively on people’s lives and this is just one example of research making a difference.”
