Students from The University of Western Australia’s Business School will have access to a state-of-the-art trading and analysis centre with the opening of The Rosemarie Nathanson Financial Markets Trading Room.

The facility gives students access to over 400 global markets and more than four million gigabytes of historical market data, from exchanges such as the ASX, NYSE, LSE and the CME, and covering over 35 million financial instruments from stocks, bonds, currencies, commodities and derivatives.

Professor Andrew Caminschi from the UWA Business School said classroom lessons would be brought to life with real-time access to the financial terminals.

“This is an advanced facility which uses industry standard tools you would find in a real hedge fund or trading desk to really give students a cutting-edge experience,” Professor Caminschi said.

“It brings together hardware, software and services from financial providers all in the one place. Our students will develop valuable job-relevant skills which are highly sought by employers.”

The room features 50 financial terminals, 160 monitors and access to markets, newsfeeds and even tweets in order to demonstrate and explore how these interact and impact prices. Ultimately, the facility aims to get students away from their textbooks and into the terminals.

“Students love the facility. What used to take them weeks of painstaking manual data collecting can now be done in a couple of keystrokes,” Professor Caminschi said.

UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Dawn Freshwater said the new world-class trading room would become a leading teaching and research facility for undergraduates, postgraduates and PhD students.

“It is the largest training facility of its kind in Australia and features state-of-the-art technology in financial terminals from some of the industry’s leading providers, providing an excellent springboard for international research opportunities,” Professor Freshwater said.

UWA commerce student Jessica Young said the new facility would provide unprecedented experience in financial markets, which would prepare her for real world opportunities.

“The data we evaluate is no longer 10 years old, it’s collected in real time. It’s really valuable to see how the theories we are taught work in real life,” Ms Young said.

“You can see how fast paced the working environment really is and you have all this global information coming at you in this one room. It’s really exciting.”

The new facility has been made possible with donations from UWA Business School graduate and UK Ambassadorial Council Member, Hilton Nathanson and the Rosemarie Nathanson Charitable Trust, BHP, John Poynton, Adrian and Michela Fini and the UWA Alumni Donor fund.
