There will be plenty to reflect on for the largest ever Uniroos team, finishing 17th with four gold medals. There was a strong showing of UWA students in the Australian team, who were provided with a strong experience of competing in one of the largest sporting events of the year.

The men’s water polo team, captained by UWA’s Nick Hughes finished in 11th overall, after sinking Korea 18-3 in their final match, with Nick scoring twice. This followed a mixed tournament for the Australian side, which saw both strong success and disappointing defeats against some of the world’s best.

The women’s water polo team finished a respectable 6th after going down 16-8 to Canada in their last game. UWA’s Sofia Chaves was a substitute for the game, scoring in the fourth quarter.

Wushu competitor Eda Pui finished 7th in Jianshu, whilst fellow UWA student Jessica Lim finished 11th in her Changquan final, which showed their ability to compete against the experienced Asian sides.

Alex Milligan and Nicholas Brown represented UWA in the swimming. Alex finished 2nd in the breaststroke heats, whilst Nicholas came 8th in the 50m Butterfly heats. The two combined with Will Stockwell and Brayden McCarthy for the men’s 4x100m freestyle, finishing 8th in the heats.

One of the biggest success stories for Australia was the Emerging Opals , who won the women’s basketball gold to take Australia’s final total to nine medals.

The Summer Universiade provides developing student-athletes with the closest experience to an Olympic Games they can get. The medals are important, but the experiences and the opportunities to further develop their sporting careers are more important for the athletes.

UWA Sport wishes all our student athletes the best for the future, and thanks them for their contributions to the Australian team.
