With the FINA World Championships in Budapest now over, the results have revealed both success and defeat for the Australian team. Some of the biggest names in Australian water sports competed against the world’s best in an effort to win big for the Green and Gold.

After a strong run in the Australian Swimming Championships, big names such as Mack Horton and Cameron McEvoy placed well, taking silver and fourth place in their respective individual finals.

UWA Alumni and UWA Sport Bursary recipient Holly Barrat finished 7th in the 50m Backstroke final, after a good showing during the heats. Holly also competed in the 50m Butterfly, where she finished 6th in her semi-final race.

Members of the UWA West Coast Swim Club, Zac Incerti and Brianna Throssell also competed, showing their ability to swim alongside international champions. Brianna ranked 11th in the heats to make the semi-final, whilst Zac helped the Australian team to an excellent rank 2nd in the heats, only to be disqualified for a false start in the finals.

Meanwhile, in the Water Polo, the Aussie Sharks Men’s team made it to the quarter-finals, only to be denied by Olympic Champions Serbia 15-5. As the competition finished, Australia landed in the top half of the teams, coming out ranked 7th.

Amongst the Australian team are members of the UWA Torpedoes, Tim Putt , George Ford and Andrew Ford . The UWA Torpedoes, who recently finished fourth in the National Water Polo League, are no doubt proud of the efforts of their three players representing in Budapest. Tim will now go on to play in the Australian Junior team with club mates Christian Kyriakou and Lachie Vos in Belgrade.

All up, it has been an excellent showing by the Australian team, who will no doubt be looking to the next competitions to improve their times and scores.
