For Jack Bao, his studies at UWA and teaching language in his first year out of University in Paraburdoo have provided the perfect mix of experience for his current role as Aspire Outreach Officer.

The Sports Science graduate has been with Aspire since the start of 2014 and he loves all the elements that make his role varied and challenging.

“I completed a Diploma of Education after my undergraduate degree and developed a passion for teaching.

“Working in Paraburdoo teaching Mandarin was such a great opportunity and gave me first-hand experience of the challenges faced in regional WA when it comes to delivering education.

“Having the chance to return to UWA and join the Aspire team meant I can use my skills to engage with students from all around the region and support them through a transition to higher education,” Jack says.

Aspire UWA is a nationally recognised program that encourages and inspires young people to explore their dreams through a university pathway.

Jack says students who would not normally consider university as an option are encouraged to see the benefits that higher education offers.

“A lot of the outreach we do focuses on lower socio-economic schools and students have not considered University as an option.

“It’s amazing how excited they become when their mindset starts to change and it’s really rewarding to play a part in this,” Jack says.

When he’s not organising events for Aspire, Jack is still putting his events skills to good use for the UWA Staff Social Club .

“What I really like about the social club is that it provides an opportunity to catch up with staff from all around the University. It’s great networking, and as we like to say a great way to pursue balance.

“The events are really enjoyable and varied. This year we’re trying out some new ones like paddle boarding on the Swan and we went to the first Freo women’s AFL game earlier this year too,” Jack says.

In September the social club will run a sundowner event at the UniClub and Jack says all staff are welcome to come along to try it out.

“We’re always welcoming new members and it would be great to see some new faces on 1 September.”

The Come and Try Sundowner will be held at the University Club on September 1, 4.30-6pm. RSVPs are essential and please email [email protected] .
