Day one has ended with a mixed bag of results for Team UWA in a chilly first day of play at the 2017 Western University Games, in Bunbury Western Australia

In a hard fought first match at the South West Sports Centre, they women’s netball team (looking to secure an early win in their campaign to qualify for the national competition this September) went down to ECU 29-43, while the mixed team played a nail biter against Murdoch coming away with a 55-59 win.

In the men’s Futsal competition, ECU took on Murdoch in the first match of the day with the Vikings taking a beating in a 12-4 loss to ECU, before UWA fell to the same fate, going down 5-9 in a hard fought math against last year’s national champions.

ECU came out strong in the first half scoring the first six goals, before UWA answered back with three quick goals at the start of the second half time. Despite the loss, UWA demonstrated great sportsmanship under pressure, and it wasn’t all bad news though with the UWA boys going on to take an 8-2 win against Murdoch in their second match of the day.

In the men’s basketball competition, 2016 Australian World Uni Champs reps Jackson Simkovic and Jake Cannel lead the men to a 47 – 30 win against ECU, before defeating Murdoch in game two. The ladies went one for one with a draw against Notre Dame , and a loss to ECU.

In Beach Volleyball, UWA 1 remain undefeated, playing UWA 2 first up and coming away with a 42-16 win, before taking on ECU to a similar end finishing up 42-18.

Play of the day goes to Jessica Butterworth – who has made a hasty retreat back to Perth, after receiving the call up to compete in the National under 21s hockey competition. Congratulations Jessica.
