The University of Western Australia has a continual roll call of awards, scholarships and prizes presented to staff and students.

To recognise these achievements, a monthly article is published on the UWA news page on the website and in UWA Forward on the first week of every month. If you know of any great awards or achievements across the University please email [email protected]

June 2017 awards and achievements

Name: Jonathon Fitzgerald
Achievement: UWA guitar tutor Jonathan Fitzgerald from the School of Music won the Museums Galleries Australia 2017 National Award for Interpretation, Learning and Audience Engagement for the performance project ‘Sound from the Ground’ which he created during his time as Artist in Residence at The National Trust of Western Australia last year.

Name: Professor Andrew Whitehouse
Achievement: UWA Centre for Child Health Research and Telethon Kids Institute researcher Andrew Whitehouse received the Autism Spectrum Australia Recognition Award for his fortnightly  ‘60 Second Science’ video series. The series explains recent scientific findings in everyday language.

Name: Winthrop Professor Paul Low and Winthrop Professor Karol Miller
Achievement: Professors Low (School of Molecular Sciences) and Miller (UWA Intelligent Systems for Medicine Laboratory) were awarded Alexander von Humboldt Research Awards at a ceremony in Bamberg, Germany. The award is granted in recognition of a researcher’s achievements to date including fundamental discoveries, new theories and insights that have had a significant impact in their field.

Name: Josephine Wilson
Achievement: Josephine Wilson’s book Extinctions has been shortlisted for the 2017 Miles Franklin Literary Award. This is the first time a UWA Publishing book has been shortlisted for the award, the most prestigious literary prize in the country.  Extinctions also won the UWA Publishing’s inaugural Dorothy Hewett Award as an unpublished manuscript.

Name: UWA Careers Team (acknowledging Career Mentor Link Coordinator Ryan Whiddett) and UWA postgraduate student Zhibo Zhang.
Achievement: The UWA Careers team was awarded the Council for International Students of Western Australia (CISWA) International Education Provider of the Year Award for the Career Mentor Link (CML) program . In addition, UWA postgraduate student Zhibo Zhang was awarded International Student of the Year by CISWA . CML is a program accessible to all disciplines and undergraduate and postgraduate students and is one of the longest running and largest university career mentoring programs in Australia.

Name: Australian Society of Medical Research Awards
Achievement: UWA takes pride in its students and early career researchers who won awards at the recent Australian Society of Medical Research congress. Awards include: • Best presentation by a PhD student (Basic Science): Christian Tjiam • Best presentation by an Honours student/Research Associate: Brooke Fehily • Best lay summary (Basic Science): Courtney George • Best lay summary (Clinical): Lisa Stinson
