More than 20 nations will descend on Suva, Fiji for four days of athletics competition at the 2017 Oceania Athletics Area Championships. Australia will be represented by two teams, Australia and Regional Australia, with 14 of WA’s top athletes set to take part.
UWA Alumni and member of the UWA Athletics Club, Alain Dutton will be among them, competing in the 800 and 1500m events. Joining him is UWA Student and UWA Sport Elite Athlete Jesse Hunt who will be up against Alain in the 1500m.
The 2017 competition will be the 16th edition of the championships, with Australia returning to Suva, Fiji after a dominant performance at the 2016 Melanesian Championships. The unique competition offers many of the region’s emerging talent their first chance to compete internationally, while not venturing too far from home.
In addition to the 14 athletes set to compete, WA will also be represented by Fiona Brown , Bob Chalmers and Toni Petts as officials at the championships.
The four-day event will be held at ANZ Stadium in Suva, Fiji from Wednesday the 28th of June and conclude on the 1st of July.
