University 5.8 (38) defeated Curtin University 0.0 (0)

The Uni Women kicked off their history on Saturday at 5pm. The women, which will be known as ‘the storm’ seemed to name themselves aptly as their first game coincided with the coldest day of the year to date. The oversized men’s guernseys provided little coverage to keep the weather away, but nothing was going to distract the Storm on what was at task.

The opposition was Curtin Uni. They were far less organised than us and unfortunately we agreed to give them two players to fill up their numbers, which was all fine until Griff decided with less than 24 hours to play that she wasn’t happy with the situation… Griff was angry and wasn’t holding back and an aggressive back-and-forth with the coach ensued… the game was almost called off, but lucky she backed down or the glory of the 38 point victory would have been lost.

With 5 pulling out through various reasons during the day of the match, the equality between the teams was being restored even before the first kick! But after that first kick it was relatively clear what the result was going to be.

Within the first three minutes, Verity had already kicked three behinds…generally poor kicking is poor football, but in this case, those three points had secured the game, the Storm could relax now!

The Storm kept the hard work up, forcing the ball forwards more in a rugby style than a football style such were the slippery conditions, they won the contested ball and Nicola Thomas laid two tackles in a minute to produce two ‘holding the balls’ to stop any chance Curtin had to attack…it was a a display that Tippa would have been proud of!

At Quarter time we went in with nearly a 3 goal lead. The second quarter saw us maintain the rage, piling on another goal through Sash Clark, but unfortunately Jill ‘Warney’ Saunders’ ticking time bomb, that is AKA her troublesome knee buckled in a tackle and she had to be carried off the ground, not without aggressively rebuking the man holding the stretcher, insisting an MCL injury doesn’t warrant a stretcher!

The 3rd was a bit of a blur, we failed to kick a goal, but the last was where Gabby Hitchen, our full forward turned the clock back to the 80s/90s where the strong, dominate FF ruled. She lead in straight lines, used her strength to push over her woman and generally intimated the opposition’s defence, while slotting 2 goals in the quarter…one a particularly classy snap.

The result was a glorious result and one befitting the work that had been put in over the last two months.
