Marshall Centre researcher, Peter Du showcased his acoustic signal processing and machine learning skills at the Perth Unearthed Hackathon on the weekend.

Unearthed is a 54-hour open innovation hackathon event focused on the resources sector. Teams go from idea to prototype on resource challenges in just a weekend.

Peter’s team (AMI – Acoustic Mapper and Isolator) won the event’s Young Innovator Award. Their challenge was to address the problem of assessing resource industry equipment performance through sounds. They extracted and analysed acoustic features and developed novel machine learning algorithms to allow instrument identification and real-time monitoring of equipment condition.

In his day job, Peter is working on the Noisy Guts Project helping to develop a belt that records and analyse gut noises over time so that doctors and accurately screen, diagnose and monitor gut conditions.
