A student from The University of Western Australia’s Faculty of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences has been awarded the prestigious 2017 Atlas Copco Scholarship. The scholarship is exclusively available to The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) students studying at Australian, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea universities in the final two years of their Bachelor’s Degree, in technical courses relevant to the minerals industry.

Emma Guerini, who is the 2017 recipient of the scholarship, is a final year mining engineering and geology student and an active committee member of the AusIMM Student Chapter at UWA. Ms Guerini developed an enthusiasm for working in the minerals industry through a love of travel, new challenges and a fascination for rocks.

As the scholarship recipient Ms Guerini will spend a week with Atlas Copco in Australia, experiencing first-hand Atlas Copco’s alliances with the Australian mining industry. Next Ms Guerini will travel to Sweden for two weeks, spending a week in Orebro with Atlas Copco’s R&D marketing teams, followed by a week visiting Swedish mining sites.

“This scholarship will allow me to gain invaluable experience which I know will be a huge advantage in my career” Ms Guerini said.

Moving forward Ms Guerini hopes to continue her involvement with the AusIMM as a mentor to younger students and use the insights gained from time spent with Atlas Copco’s innovative technology to further her interest in the future of mining.
