The University of Western Australia has a continual roll call of awards, scholarships and prizes presented to staff and students.

To recognise these achievements, a monthly article is published on the UWA news page on the website and in UWA Forward on the first week of every month. If you know of any great awards or achievements across the University please email [email protected]

Awards and achievements

Name: Dr Willem Lesterhuis, School of Medicine and Pharmacology
Achievement: UWA Research Fellow Dr Lesterhuis has been made a fellow three times: he was awarded a National Health and Medical Research Council Career Development Fellowship, the inaugural Bernie Banton Fellowship and a Cancer Council of WA Fellowship.

Name: Josephine Wilson
Achievement: Extinctions , a book written by UWA graduate Josephine Wilson, has been longlisted for the 2017 Miles Franklin Literary Award. This is the first time a UWA Publishing book has been longlisted for the prize.

Name: Bronwyn Ayre, School of Plant Biology
Achievement: PhD student Bronwyn Ayre has won the FameLab semi-final of 2017. Ms Ayre will compete in the national final on Thursday 4 May. FameLab is one of the biggest science communication competitions in the world where individuals are challenged to explain a complex scientific concept to a general audience in just three minutes.

Name: Venus Tran, Faculty of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences
Achievement: UWA student Venus Tran is a National Council of Women WA Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine (STEMM) Bursary winner. Ms Tran is in her final year of studying a Master in Professional Engineering at UWA.

Name: Professor David Blair, School of Physics and Astrophysics, Dr James Fitzpatrick, Telethon Kids Insitute, Professor Jessica Meeuwig, Centre for Marine Futures, Professor Peter Thompson, Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research and adjunct senior research fellow Marion Fulker and UWA graduate Dr Andrew Forrest.
Achievement: These UWA staff members and graduates have been announced as finalists in the 2017 Western Australian of the Year Awards. The Western Australian of the Year Awards recognise and celebrate outstanding contributions to the state by those born in Western Australian or those who have made Western Australian their home. Finalists and winners will be announced on Friday 2 June.
