February 2017 awards and achievements

Name: Dr Willem Joost Lesterhuis, National Centre for Asbestos Related Diseases (NCARD)

Achievement: Dr Lesterhuis, a senior researcher from the National Centre for Asbestos Related Diseases, was made a fellow twice over in recent weeks. He has been awarded both an NHMRC Career Development Fellowship and the inaugural Bernie Banton Fellowship. It’s a tremendous success for Joost, who emigrated with his family from the Netherlands to Western Australia in 2014 to work at NCARD after a successful two year stint as a Visiting Scientist with the group. His current research includes combination immunotherapy and chemotherapy for mesothelioma, and the use of network science to discover why some cancer patients respond to therapies, while others do not.

Name: Professor Petra Tschakert, UWA Centenary Professor in Rural Development and Deputy Head of School of UWA School of Agriculture and Environment

Achievement: Professor Tschakert appointed coordinating lead author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Special Report Global Warming of 1.5C . Professor Tschakert is internationally recognised for her work examining climate change adaptation, social-ecological resilience, and participatory research within a development context.

Name: Terri-ann White, UWA Publishing

Achievement: Hazel Rowley Literary Fellowship

Terri-ann White was recently shortlisted for the 2017 Hazel Rowley Literary Fellowship worth $15,000 for a biography of Fiona Stanley (through key objects). The winner will be announced during Adelaide Writers Week.
