Over the weekend an underground mains water pipe ruptured in the Physics building causing widespread flooding in the building’s basement.

The University’s swift response prevented the water reaching a level that would have caused critical damage to high value research equipment, and the building's High Voltage plant and infrastructure.

Work to replace damaged flooring; and operational testing to assess research equipment is underway. Completed works are expected to take up to two weeks.

Staff have been asked to avoid the basement area during the recovery works so the area can return to normal operation as quickly as possible.

Thank you to everyone who was involved in isolating and containing the flooding and the subsequent cleaning and repairs.
