At the end of last month UWA’s New Colombo Plan (NCP) Scholarship recipients gathered in Canberra with other winners from around Australia for their official send off dinner.
This year UWA has a record eight scholarship recipients which Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Community and Engagement) Kent Anderson says is a fantastic result.
“This is double the number of NCP scholarships UWA students have received in the past, and a testament to the students and staff involved.
“All 10 applicants were provided with resume and interview coaching from the Global Learning Office and Careers Centre and it is clear that this guidance proved very valuable, with eight being successful.
“I’m delighted we have been able to add value to our students’ applications by providing this additional coaching and mentoring.
"Two of our students, Liam Kearney and Iven Manning, were recognised as NCP Fellows which means they were the top-ranked recipients for their locations, which is exceptional news,” says Professor Anderson.
The NCP provides opportunities for Australian undergraduate students to undertake semester-based study in participating Indo-Pacific locations.
Professor Anderson says during this time students have access to internships, mentorship, and language training and are encouraged to participate in community engagement and advocacy in relation to the New Colombo Plan.
UWA has strong connections to this important Program with local member the Hon Julie Bishop the Program’s champion who was pleased to see UWA students do so well. Professor Anderson, Professor Krishna Sen and UWA graduate Tom Williams also serve on the Advisory Board.
Earlier this year UWA was also awarded $677,600 for funding 12 student mobility projects, under the NCP Mobility Program and UWA-hosted ACICIS was awarded $2.173 million.
