The University is pleased to announce that the Dean of Law, Professor Erika Techera, has been appointed as the Director of the UWA Oceans Institute and will commence her new role on 1 January 2017.

The blue economy is at the heart of Australia’s economic future as well as other Indian Ocean countries and Professor Techera’s vision for the Oceans Institute is for it to be a global leader in the field as research continues on addressing the challenges and opportunities involving our oceans.

As a multidisciplinary marine research centre, Professor Techera is committed to strengthening engagement and broadening membership of the Oceans Institute both within UWA and with external partners.  The completion of the new Indian Ocean Marine Research Centre provides an exciting and unique opportunity that brings together over 240 researcher and partners, CSIRO, AIMS and the Department of Fisheries.

Professor Techera has been at UWA since 2012 and prior to this was Director of the Centre for International Environmental Law and Co-Director for the Centre for Climate Futures at Macquarie University. Her area of research interest is international and comparative environmental law with a particular emphasis on marine environmental governance.
