October 2016 awards and achievements

Name: Garrett Bray

Achievement: Cambridge Australia Frank Downing Scholarship

UWA alumnus, Garrett Bray, has been awarded a prestigious Cambridge Australia Frank Downing Scholarship, allowing him to commence a Masters in Engineering for Sustainable Development at the University of Cambridge in October 2016. Garrett is passionate about sustainability and the built environment, and studying the MPhil in Engineering for Sustainable Development at Cambridge will help Garrett to leverage this background.

Name: Georgia Oman

Achievement: Cambridge Australia A P Platt Scholarship

UWA alumna, Georgia Oman, has been awarded a prestigious Cambridge Australia A P Platt Scholarship, allowing her to commence a Masters in Modern British History at the University of Cambridge in October 2016. Georgia aims to explore how the movement to grant women access to higher education in the second half of the nineteenth century in Britain was received by the existing male student population.

Name: Assistant Professor Paul Abbott, Professor Farid Boussaidi and Ms Penny Carruthers

Achievement: Australian Awards for University Teaching

Assistant Professor Paul Abbott, Professor Farid Boussaidi and Ms Penny Carruthers were recognised at The Australian Awards for University Teaching: Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning last week.

Name: Dr Lucy Dougan

Achievement: WA Premier's Book Award for Poetry

Research and Administration Officer at UWA’s Westerly Centre Dr Dougan has been presented the Poetry Award at the Annual Premier’s Book Awards

Name: Dr Ruth Morgan

Achievement: WA Premier's Book Award for Western Australian History

Dr Ruth Morgan has been awarded the WA History category at the WA Premier's Book Awards. Running Out? Water in Western Australia is an engrossing environmental history that questions life as we approach an uncertain future in a drying climate.

The book awards recognise the breadth of literary works available to readers today – from traditional novels, non-fiction works and poetry collections in hard copy, to digital narratives able to be accessed on tablets and smartphones.

Name: Professor Alexandra Ludewig

Achievement: Book launch of Born German, Re-born in Western Australia

Professor Ludewig, Head of School of Humanities, book was launched by the Governor of Western Australia, Her Excellency the Honourable Kerry Sanderson AC at an event at the German Consulate, celebrating the Day of German Unity.

Name: ProfessorChristobel Saunders and Professor Graeme Hankey

Achievement: Inducted as fellows into the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences

Professor Saunders, from UWA’s School of Surgery and Professor Graeme Hankey, School of Medicine and Pharmacology QEII Medical Centre Unit, were formerly inducted into the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences at the second Annual Scientific Meeting in Brisbane. It is a well-deserved recognition of their achievements.

Name: Thea Lendich

Achievement: 2016 Istituto Italiano di Cultura (Melbourne) Literary Translation Prize

UWA student, Thea Lendich, has been awarded the prestigious 2016 Instituto Italiano di Cultura (Melbourne) Literary Translation Prize.
