The annual UWA Sport Awards were held last Thursday 27 October at the Reveley Room – Perth Arena.
The awards celebrate the achievements of past and present students, including the announcement of the prestigious Blues and Half Blues. The award categories recognise outstanding sporting performance and service by individuals, teams, and clubs across UWA.
The sold out awards night hosted several of the university’s executive, including Professor Kent Anderson, who gave the welcome address on behalf of UWA Sport, and Professor Dawn Freshwater who presented our Blue and Half blue recipients with their awards.
The Spirit Shield, Nicholson Cup and Overall Championship were awarded to St Catherine’s College. For the first time since 1998 the Inter-Faculty Cup was a tie and awarded to the Western Australian Medical Student Society (WAMSS) and the Physical Education Students Association (PESA).
Team UWA was acknowledged for their incredible performance at the 2016 Australian University Games where they won the Overall Championship and Doug Ellis Award for the most pennants per capita. And congratulations to everyone who represented Team UWA at the Indigenous University Games – our Western Waaglys secured third place overall.
The Coach of the Year Award was presented to Michael Shaw from UWA West Coast Swimming Club and the Club of the Year was awarded to UWA Hockey Hockey Club following an incredibly strong season across multiple divisions.
The final award of the evening was the coveted UWA Sport Star of the Year and it was presented to champion swimmer Alex Milligan from UWA West Coast Swimming Club.
Holding several number one state and national rankings, Alex was an individual finalist at the Olympic selection trials for 2016, member of the Australia Team for the Junior Pan-Pacific Championship in Hawaii, USA, and selected on the 2016 NextGEN AUS Commonwealth Games Swimming Squad.
Congratulations to all our athletes who won awards on the night and thank you to everyone who attended.
