Day five, saw an action packed schedule of finals played out throughout the day across Perth for the 2016 Australian University Games.

Women’s hockey started off the day with a semi-final win against Monash to take them through to the final against QUT in the afternoon, giving us a double header grand finale with our men’s team also playing off for gold in a West Australian showdown against Curtin University!

Both teams for the first time in several years where able to take out the gold medal matches, with gold for the women in a 2-1 defeat, and gold for the men in a stellar performance that saw them take home the gold, in a 3-1 takedown of Curtin University.

Men’s and Women’s ultimate also started off the day early with two 9am semi-finals matches. The women cruised through the semi, and took out the gold in the final match of the day against the University of Sydney, while the men played off in a bronze medal match against Monash coming away with third place.

Our Ten pin bowling team lost their semi-final early in the day and played off for bronze against Curtin taking our third place in the championship.

UWA men’s badminton won bronze in a hard fought third set, against Melbourne uni, while our UWA Squash team brought home the gold lead by captain Hasitha at the Terrace Squash Centre.

Our volleyball sides played off throughout the day. Indoor men’s volleyball took out silver with Stefan Raovic awarded a green and gold!

Mixed beach volleyball lost their semi-final against The University of Sydney early in the day and played off for bronze in a hard fought match that saw the men take the game into a fifth set before losing out to take fourth place. Men’s beach also lost out finishing 4th, while women’s beach took out the bronze medal against UNDA.

Our women’s basketball team played a fantastic competition over the week, taking out bronze in the division two final early Friday afternoon, while the UWA men's basketball team played a thriller of a game against VU taking out gold in the division one grand finale.

Capping off a stellar day of competition, the Men’s AFL took out the gold in a hard fought win against fellow Western Australian competitors Curtin Uni. Gold was also on the agenda for UWA cycling and fencing bringing our tally of grand final wins to five.

Will Boulden and crew took our the silver in the World Sailing University Match Racing Championships , which also played out in Perth this week – and what a great effort!

The closing ceremony was held at Northbridge Brewing company to shelter athletes from the rain, but nothing could dampen the spirits of Team UWA who took out the per capita Championship AND the University Games Overall Championship for 2016.

Congratulations to all our Athletes on a great week of play!
