August 2016 awards and achievements

Name: Professor Professor Erika Techera (pictured right)
Achievement: Australian Law Award's Academic of the Year

UWA Law Dean, Professer Techera, was presented with the award last week. The award recognises the academic who is most effectively shaping legal undergraduate and JD students, instilling a passion for the law, professional excellence and expertise.

Name: Associate Professor Wendy Davis
Achievement: Australian Diabetes Society’s Geoff Flack Diabetes Data Award

Associate Professor Davis, from UWA’s School of Medicine and Pharmacology and based at Fremantle Hospital, was presented with the award at last week’s Australian Diabetes Society and Australian Diabetes Educators Association Annual Scientific Meeting on Queensland’s Gold Coast.

Name: Professor Shaun Collin
Achievement: Optometry Australia’s H Barry Collin Research Meda

Deputy Director of UWA’s Oceans Institute and WA Premier’s Research Fellow, Professor Collin was recognised for his outstanding contribution to research in the fields of neuroscience and marine science. Over the past three years, Professor Collin has been funded by the Western Australian Government to develop and test shark deterrents based on his knowledge of the sensory systems of sharks and their relatives.

Name: Honorary Research Fellow Noelene Bloomfield
Achievement: Le Prix Jules Ducros-Auber

France's Société de Géographie has awarded Mrs Bloomfield and co-author Frédéric Mouchet the prestigious award for their book L'Australie des Explorateurs Français / The Australia of the French Explorers. Their book contains historical maps drawn by French cartographers during France’s exploration of Australia's coastal regions in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, before Britain had fully claimed this continent.  It also contains magnificent portraits of the Aboriginal people of that era drawn by the French expedition artists, as well as their superb drawings of Australia's unique flora and fauna.

Name: Dr Louise Devenish
Achievement: APRA/AMCOS WA State Award for Performance of the Year

Head of Percussion and Artist in Residence at UWA’s School of Music, Dr Devenish won the state award as part of APRA/AMCOS 2016 Australian Art Music Awards for her performance of electro-acoustic music for one percussionist.

Name: The University Club of Western Australia
Achievement: Restaurant & Catering Association State Awards for Function/Convention Centre Caterer

This is the second year in a row that the University Club has won the catering award for function/convention centre.
