UWA’s cutting edge entrepreneurs will be recognised tonight for their contributions to innovation at the annual Vice-Chancellors’ awards.

For his work on developing an automatic 3D facial analysis system for facial rejuvenation, Dr Syed Afaq Ali Shah from the School of Computer Science and Software Engineering has won the Research Impact Through Enterprise award.

A team at the Marshall Centre for Infectious Diseases, led by Dr Josephine Muir, has won the CSIRO Commercialisation award for their Noisy Gut project. The team are developing an acoustic belt that listens, records and analyses gut noises to help personalise treatments and solutions to irritable bowel syndrome.

Winners have been part of the Innovation Quarter’s Start Something program, a series of five entrepreneur-led workshops designed to encourage and foster research enterprise and industry engagement.

The final Start Something award, the Entrepreneurship prize, has been jointly won by Aspire’s Elisa McGowan and Master of Biotechnology student Christopher James. This will be awarded after Research Week and both will receive one-on-one mentoring and support from the Innovation Quarter and the Office of Research Enterprise.
