More than 130 medical and health science students from China and Vietnam are spending a month at The University of Western Australia participating in a research training program.

This year’s program has attracted 137 students in clinical medicine, dental sciences, pharmacy and laboratory medicine.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University Medical School has sent 32 students while there are 20 from Nanjing University, 16 from Shantou University Medical College, 33 from Zhejiang University, 18 from Wenzhou Medical University, 10 from Kunming Medical University, six from Sun Yat-Sen University and two from Vietnam’s Pham Ngoc Thach University.

The Winter School Program enables visiting students to experience UWA’s research and learning, understand the process and requirements of PhD study at UWA, develop conceptual thinking on project design, scientific writing for biomedical and clinical research and publication and learn techniques to enhance research at their home universities.

Established in 2010, the program aims to boost educational programs and research capacity as well as strengthening international collaborations. This year’s program has expanded to include palliative care, psychiatry, pharmacy and clinical specialties.

Since its inception, the program has led to increased numbers of postgraduate students enrolling in biomedical and health sciences at UWA.

The students arrived on Saturday 30 July and are being billeted with families across Perth.

The Winter School Program is run by coordinator Professor Ming-Hao Zheng, Associate Dean (International) of UWA’s Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences.

Professor Zheng said in the past, students had not only enjoyed their learning experience on campus but also being able to stay with local families.

“This gave them plenty of opportunities to improve their English language skills and cultural awareness,” he said.

The students will also visit some of Perth’s top attractions including Kings Park, Rottnest Island, Fremantle and Perth Zoo. The students will also have the opportunity to work closely with UWA medical and dental students in the classroom and clinically.
