An art exhibition showcasing the recent and final works of senior contemporary Australian artist Miriam Stannage will open at The University of Western Australia’s Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery on Saturday 30 July and run until Saturday 30 September.

The free exhibition Miriam Stannage: Survey 2006 - 2016 celebrates the strange and beautiful by using everyday objects to offer a commentary on the fragile and transitory nature of our time on this planet.

Woven through her work is a persistent fascination with surveillance, cameras and the complex moral and ethical implications of observation.

Curated by Lee Kinsella, Miriam Stannage: Survey 2006 - 2016 showcases the artist’s observations of life and ongoing experimentation with installations, photographs, paintings, video, drawings and artist’s books.

UWA Chief Cultural Officer Professor Ted Snell said Miriam Stannage was a relentless innovator whose practice was founded on a deep intellectual engagement with, and curiosity about, the challenges and nature of contemporary life.

“For the last 45 years, she has consistently challenged her audience and taken them on a journey to understand the nature of perception and the ways in which our vision constructs the parametres of our world,” Professor Snell said.

Photographs from Miriam’s major series including Elvis and Marilyn (Spirit Photographs), 2009-2010, Paradise Lost, 2008, and the most recent Security Notice series, 2014 -2015, will be on display, among her ten final paintings.

A monograph on the artist, Miriam Stannage: Time Framed, published by UWA Publishing and edited by the curator Lee Kinsella, will also be launched at the exhibition.
