As July rolled in, our University of Western Australia (UWA) Western Uni Gamers rolled out, to compete in the first inaugural 2016 Western Uni Games! 248 Student athletes, 26 teams, 15 sports, and five staff members undertook the challenge, to reign in a win, defending our long held Tertiary sports WA title! With hot competition from Edith Cowen (ECU), Murdoch, Notre Dame and most notably Curtin University of Technology, it was UWA who had the most to lose, with several years reign at the top of the state table to defend.

Curtain stayed hot on our tail for most of the week; with surprise upset wins in several of our pennants divisions. But it wasn’t enough to take the championship, despite prematurely being awarding the cup, before UWA came from behind in our last pennant to snatch the win!

In what was a stellar week of competition, culminating in not only the State Championship, but the much prized Spirit of the Games award as well, UWA is in prime position to welcome interstate rivals onto home turf to compete for the National title!

With that said, before we all turn our focus to Australian University sports National Uni Games competition, (Perth Sept 26 – 30), let’s see how are our teams are shaping up.

Of 15 Sports with 19 pennant divisions, UWA Took out 8 pennants including mixed touch, women’s volleyball, men’s tennis, men’s squash, open golf, men’s beach volleyball, men’s futsal and men’s football ahead of Curtains University’s 7 pennants, making us one of the teams to beat, leading into AUG this September.

Honorable mentions to touch for imagining a new mascot each day of the competition, men’s volleyball for their amazing comeback from two sets down to only lose by two points to Curtin in their grand final, and the men’s ultimate team who had the fiercest pre game chant over the week. A dishonorable mention to the UWA Squash team who managed to slowly chip away at the reserve of the only Curtin competitor to front up to the competition, who as we understand it has now joined the UWA Squash Club.

Congratulations on all your efforts.
