The University of Western Australia farewelled its Rio Olympians last week at a lively breakfast event where the role of university sport was discussed by panel led by former Australian water polo player and UWA graduate Richard Pengelley.

As it stands UWA has one student and three graduates representing Australia next month in Rio, with several teams yet to be selected. Current Bachelor of Science student George Ford (water polo) will compete in his first Olympics and alumni Fergus Kavanagh (hockey), Deb Tasi (synchronised swimming) and Adam Commens (coach, women’s hockey) are all vying for gold.

UWA alumni Heidi Gan will compete in her second Olympics, representing Malaysia in long distance swimming.

A number of UWA club members have also been selected for Rio:

  • Kirsty Dwyer UWA Hockey Club
  • Dan Beale UWA Hockey Club
  • Jodie Kenny UWA Hockey Club
  • Georgia Morgan: UWA Hockey Club
  • Tuko Maia: UWA Fencing Club President
  • Blair Evans : UWA Swimming Club
  • Tasmin Cook: UWA Swimming Club
