COFS PhD student, Mr Minjung Jun was awarded a 2016 OMAE scholarship for outstanding students. The scholarship is in recognition of outstanding academic achievement and the potential to become a leader in the offshore mechanics and polar engineering field. Minjung also had an opportunity to participate in the conference’s Outreach to Engineers Speciality Forum. Various subjects related to the offshore energy business such as subsea structures, floating platform and renewable energy engineering were introduced in this forum.

Minjung presented a paper at the OMAE conference entitled “A Novel Spudcan for Easing Spudcan-Footprint Interaction Issues”. The paper was co-authored with COFS academics Youngho Kim, Shazzad Hossain, Mark Cassidy, and Yuxia Hu; and with Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Co. Ltd. personnel Jonghwa Won, and Jong-Sik Park.

Minjung’s research aims to investigate alternative footing shapes to mitigate the risk induced by spudcan-footprint interaction during installation of jack-up rigs. The numerical methods and models developed for this study will allow for exploring similar problems in offshore geotechnical engineering.
