June 2016 awards and achievements
Name: Dr Julian Bolleter
Achievement: The Margaret Medcalf Award
Recognising excellence in research and referencing using the State Archives collection, the Margaret Medcalf Award was presented to Dr Bolleter for his book ‘ Take me to the River’ charting Perth’s evolving relationship with its waterfront.
Name: Professor David Andrich
Achievement: Benjamin Drake Wright Senior Scholar Award
Chapple Chair of Education at UWA’s Graduate School of Education, Professor Andrich was awarded the inaugural Benjamin Drake Wright Senior Scholar Award by the Rasch Measurement Special Interest Group of the American Educational Research Association, taking home $1000US and a plaque.
Name: Dr Gang (Kevin) Li
Achievement: Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering (ATSE) Global Connections Fund Priming Grant
Dr Li, who is a Theme Leader at the Australian Centre for LNG Futures at UWA, has been successful in his application for an ATSE Global Priming Grant. The grants are a Federal Government initiative aligning with the national innovation and science agenda allowing local researchers to engage with international small-to-medium enterprises.
Name: Dr Gail Alvares
Achievement: Radio National/University of New South Wales Top 5 Under 40 Award for Science Communicators
Research by Dr Alvares on ‘novel and affordable’ ways to improve the quality of life for children with autism won her this hotly contested award and the chance to undertake a media residency at ABC Radio National.
Name: Tim Minchin
Achievement: 2016 Helpmann Award Nominations
UWA graduate and Honorary Doctorate Tim Minchin’s Matilda the Musical has dominated the 2016 Helpmann Award nominations. The musical is up for 13 awards, including Best Musical, Best Director of a Musical, Best Male Actor in a Musical, Best Female Actor in a Musical and Best Original Score for Mr Minchin’s music and lyrics.
Name: Honorary Research Fellow Iain Grandage
Achievement: 2016 Helpmann Awards Nomination
UWA School of Music graduate and Honorary Research Fellow Iain Grandage was nominated for Best Music Direction for his production of Home which was part of the Perth International Arts Festival. The multi-award winning composer, conductor and performer joined Tim Minchin and 500 of WA’s most accomplished musicians, writers and artists on a 60 metre stage for the “massive, theatrical, outdoor spectacular” that marked the first weekend of PIAF.
Name: Shaun Lee-Chen
Achievement: 2016 Helpmann Award Nomination
The Australian Brandenburg Orchestra was nominated for Best Chamber and/or Instrumental Ensemble Concert for their French Baroque with Circa with UWA School of Music graduate Shaun Lee-Chen in the role of Concertmaster. Shaun is currently Artist in Residence and Coordinator of violin studies at UWA’s School of Music.
