What a great semester it has been here at UWA Sport! We’ve been busy preparing some amazing new offerings, getting ready for Uni games, and as always handling everything sport on and off campus!

With so much going on its always great to have a few extra hands on deck, and this semester we were lucky enough to have 17 superstar Prac students come up from Sports Science to lend a hand.

Although prac stints are often synonymous with morning coffee runs and mindless data entry, at UWA Sport we do things a little bit differently. Engaged over a period of ten weeks, our prac students are given a hands on taste of what the industry has to offer. We aim to give them a solid understanding of the Fitness and sports industry, and expose them to real world scenarios and troubleshooting practices to prepare them for life after Uni. Learning all aspects of our business and our product offerings, our Prac students spend time in each department including our Recreate and outdoor programs team, clubs, student athletes, the gym and fitness centre and our on campus competitions team. From understanding market expectations and real world business practices, to observing and conducting our new member inductions and consultations we ensure we turn over well rounded and knowledgeable students that are prepared for work in the industry.

All of our practical students were with us to complete the requirements for their Professional Practice unit, (a massive 70 hours) and were a great, albeit temporary addition to the team.

While practical placements are an integral and important part of study for students, what many people fail to recognise is the value added opportunity this presents employers. (No that doesn’t mean the free labour, or someone to pass those pesky filing jobs onto,) for us it is a chance to see UWAs penultimate students at work and give them the opportunity to follow a path into employment right here at UWA Sport.

Following our practical placements this semester we were over joyed to b able to present four of our students with the offer of employment at the UWA Sport and fitness centre this year. Employed as fitness trainers, mentored by our very own Sharu Chandra, they now lead their own personal and small group training sessions, and instruct our specially developed group fitness classes, including Jumpstart, Fit-box and Ultra-fit!

It’s never easy to say goodbye, but at UWA Sport its only good bye for now. We develop real relationships with our prac students and do our best to give them a real window into the fitness industry. Are you a UWA Sport science and health student? Thinking about taking professional practice? Speak to your school and see how you can become involved with the UWA Sport practicum!
