Repairs to the damaged Margaret Priest swan weather vane, located on the Arts Building (one of the University’s treasures and icons) is estimated to take up to approximately 4 to 6 weeks.

Activities to restore the art work, include:

  • Scaffold installation around the tower
  • Removal of the weather vane and transport off site for repairs, Wednesday 8 June
  • Replace broken roof tiles
  • Repair to ceilings and lighting inside tower
  • Reinstate repaired weather vane

What impacts to expect
There will be some noise associated with the construction of the scaffolding and the replacement of roof tiles. An increased area will be isolated to allow the crane to remove the artwork on Wednesday 8 June.

Access below the weather vane will be restricted to construction personnel during this period.

The Margaret Priest swan weather vane, located on the tower of the Arts Building has snapped and has been identified as unstable in its current position.

Campus Management has barricaded the potential hazard area, and is waiting for a crane to enter the site and remove the weather vane from the roof.

In the meantime, we strongly advise that students and staff do not enter the barricaded area until this site has been deemed safe.

A crane wil be onsite for the remainder of the week to assist with the removal of the Margaret Priest swan weather vane.
