On Saturday, UWA’s flagship geopolitical forum In the Zone drew a crowd of 1000 for its annual event, held this year for the first time outside of Perth in Jakarta, Indonesia.  In partnership with the UWA-based Perth USAsia Centre and Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI), the event brought together premier thinkers from Australia and Indonestia to discuss “feeding the zone” and explore how to best use innovation, investment, and international cooperation to solve food production problems in Indo-Pacific Asia.

UWA visiting professor and former president of Indonesia Dr Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono delivered a keynote speech calling upon leaders in the region to work together to stop the waste of approximately USD70 billion of food per year. Indonesian actress and advocate Chelsea Islan called upon the students in attendance to consider the future when making food choices and to make sustainability a norm.

Other speakers included WA Agricultural Minister Dean Nalder MLA, and UWA’s own Professor Kadambot Siddique, director of the Institute of Agriculture, Professor Michael Blakeney, professor of law, and Professor Stephen Smith.

Indonesian based media CNN, Detik.com, and Rakyat Merdeka covered the event while in Australia it was covered in a special eight-page lift-out in Friday’s The Australian .

At the conclusion of Saturday’s event Professor Kent Anderson announced the theme for next year’s In the Zone conference: “Blue Zone: Resources, Environment and Security in the Indo-Pacific Maritime Realm” to be held in Perth next year.
