Hailing originally from Porte Alegre, Brazil,Tuko moved to Australia in 2004 with his wife and two beautiful children before making the move west several years ago. As Head Coach at the University of Western Australia Fencing Club (UWAFC) and the State Development Officer for Fencing WA, Tuko Maia was this year a clear pick to join the officiating team at The Rio Olympics!

A Maitre d’Armes (Master Fencing Coach) for the International Fencing Federation (FIE) and Exercise Physiologist at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Tuko holds a Bachelor in Sport Science and post-graduate qualifications in Sports Administration.

Since his arrival at UWA Fencing Club, Tuko has taken the team from strength to strength, increasing the club’s profile with strong membership numbers and created the only fencing club in WA with permanent pistes.

Producing National Champions across all age divisions. His students have participated at World Uni Games/UNIVERSIADE, Fencing World Championships, Asian Championships, World Cups and Commonwealth Fencing Games in the Open, Junior (U20) and Cadets (U17) divisions.

His recent appointment to the Rio 2016 Event Test: Fencing Team World Championships and the Grand Prix of Epee last April in Rio, have recently seen him spend considerable time back home overseeing preparations for the long awaited games! Speaking the native language of Brazil, with five other languages under his belt, Tuko is a perfect pick for the role.
