Past and current University Hall (UniHall) residents have donated over 40 of their old bikes to communities in need through Africa and rural Western Australia (WA).

The volunteer run grass roots charity organisation, Bicycles for Humanity collected the bikes as a contribution towards their focus on the alleviation of poverty through sustainable transport – cycling!

As residents graduate from The University of Western Australia (UWA) and move out of UniHall, they leave behind items such as old text books, ironing boards, storage containers and bikes for future residents to use to make their stay at the Hall comfortable.

This year students opted to donate their bikes to communities who will be able to use these to improve their daily routines – cycling to collect water for family instead of walking the 16km.

The bikes are first sent to bike workshops which provide employment, skills, training, business, economic development and opportunities for volunteers. Here they are repaired and then packed into shipping containers and trucks en route for Namibia and Zambia in Africa and Broome and smaller inland towns in WA.

The Hall hopes to make this a regular tradition as a great opportunity to give back to those in need.
