Reading doesn't have to be a solitary pursuit. In fact, the best books are conversation starters. To bring some of these conversations to life, UWA Publishing has been hosting a series of Literary High Teas .

Publishing Officer Charlotte Guest says this is the second year they have hosted the high tea events and they're proving to be very successful.

“One Saturday a month attendees enjoy petit fours and author talks that inform and entertain. From ecology to urban planning to the imaginary worlds of fiction writers, be lead through diverse subjects while enjoying delicacies prepared by the University Club chefs,” she says.

Publishing books across fiction, poetry, and non-fiction, UWAP titles celebrate dynamic voices and local stories. As such, many of the speakers are local authors whose topics are especially relevant to Perth residents.

“At the April high tea Julian Bolleter, Assistant Professor at the Australian Urban Design Research Centre guided us through alternate visions for Perth’s foreshore that could have radically changed our city’s identity. It was a timely reminder that Elizabeth Quay is simply one imagining of our riverfront, with over 200 schemes having been proposed since Perth City was established in 1829,” she says.

“In May, author of The Southwest Victoria Laurie will chat to us about biodiversity in the southwest of Western Australia, one of the few biodiversity hotspots in the world.”

The Literary High Teas provide a setting in which big questions can be approached in a meaningful and pleasurable way and anyone is welcome.

“You do not have to be a University Club member to attend these events, but numbers are limited. To book, call the UWA University Club reception on (08) 6488 8770. Please specify that you wish to book for the Literary High Tea ."
