The UWA West Coast Swimming Club had a team of six swimmers competing at the 2016 Hancock Prospecting Australian Championships, heald in the first two weeks of April! The group included Tamsin Cook, Blair Evans, Hadley Lindsay, Damian Fyfe, Zac Incerti & Alex Milligan.

In just the first three days alone, we have seen Alex Milligan, Zac Incerti, Blair Evans and Tamsin Cook all make the finals, and most notably Blair Evans and Tamsin Cook will be coming home with gold and silver medals respectively and a ticket to Rio!

“It’s been a really hard-fought three or four years for me,” Evans said.

“We were aiming for this sort of time for trials but there has been a few hits and misses in training the last few weeks with injuries. But to be able to come out and have such an enormous swim and a lifetime PB for me. I am so extremely happy.”

Tamsin Cook, already Junior World Champion, pushed Jessica Ashwood all the way in the 400 Freestyle event.

Seventeen-year-old Cook was bowled over when she heard the word Olympian used about her future. Dreaming of going to the Olympics since the age of 10,inspired by Libby Trickett and Stephanie Rice at the Beijing Games, she couldn’t believe that she could now count herself amongst them.

“I just can’t believe it,” she said. “I was very nervous but I just told myself that when I get out there I have to be fearless and race to my race plan. And I think that’s what I did and I am just so happy to have gone under that qualifying time.”

“There is such a wealth of experience and hopefully I’ll be able to gain a lot and learn a lot from the older guys on the team over the next few weeks or months.”

Congratulations to them both.  We will, no doubt, hear much more from Blair and Tamsin over the next few months.
