Following a successful fundraising appeal organised by Rotary and supported by the local Sri Lankan community and PathWest QE2 Medical Centre, two of our microbiologists are off to Sri Lanka in June to train clinical laboratory staff in molecular methods for locally emerging infectious diseases.

The Rotary International project follows on from a World Health Organization capability building project that ran from 2008-2011, and will concentrate on leptospirosis, dengue and melioidosis. The project is funding the installation of molecular diagnostic equipment in laboratories at Peradeniya, Jaffna and Nuwara Eliya to strengthen regional pathology services.

Future expansion of the network is expected as Sri Lankan colleagues extend their test repertoire to meet newly emerging diseases.
